Rats are burrowing animals who like to live underground and in drains and sewers. They will also invade our homes as we provide them with warmth and a plentiful supply of food. A pair of brown rats can produce as many as 200 babies and 2,000 descendants in a year. A rat’s tail provides balance and stability and regulates their body temperature. A rats whiskers help the rat to travel around, orient themselves and to work out if they can fit through holes. They can jump vertically up to 77cm and up to 120cm horizontally. Brown rats are resilient swimmers and are able to swim for over 70 hours non-stop. Rats can hear and produce ultrasound and they use it to communicate with other rats.
